Buenos Aires Introduces Biometric ID for Betting Sites

The province of Buenos Aires has mandated that licensed online betting sites must implement mandatory biometric identification to prevent individuals under 18 from accessing the platforms. Government Minister Carlos Bianco announced the new measure on Monday during a press conference, aimed at preventing and addressing ludopathy (gambling addiction). The official stated that the seven sites in Buenos Aires are required to “implement biometric identification and identity verification systems on all licensed sites.” “They will have to identify themselves and provide proof of life at the moment of access,” Bianco stated, according to the Argentine News Agency. Another point raised at the conference is that these platforms have a maximum of 60 days to implement the system. Last week, it was reported that the president of the Buenos Aires Provincial Lottery, Gonzalo Atanasof, denounced more than 300 illegal betting sites to the Specialized Fiscal Units of the Judicial Departments of Lomas de Zamora, La Matanza, and San Isidro. These presentations not only expose the existence of these clandestine platforms but also request the identification of their responsible parties and administrators to expand criminal charges, as their involvement in money laundering and tax evasion schemes is presumed. It is noted that all these websites end with the bet.ar domain. This will prevent any unauthorized access to the platforms using family members' data.
